Cases and Claims

Facial Recognition Discrimination Case

The ADCU believes that Uber has knowingly used automated facial recognition systems known to have a high error rate when used with people of colour but has nevertheless relied on the results of these systems to dismiss drivers from their jobs. We believe our rights to freedom from discrimination have been violated. Claims have been started against Uber for harassment related to race, victimisation and indirect race discrimination.

If you have been dismissed as a result of a failed facial recognition check, click here to register your details for us to assess the possibility of making a claim.

Help Keep The Fight Alive

ADCU receives no public funds or government grants of any kind. We depend exclusively on the financial support of our members, so any donation from supporters is welcome and appreciated.
Help support our legal case against Uber over unfair dismissals and their discriminatory facial recognition system. We are seeking crowdfund support for the legal challenge to go alongside support from the Equality and Human Rights Commission.

Help us mount a strong legal challenge against Uber and help put an end to race related harassment, discrimination and victimisation in the workplace.

Live Update on the #UberStrike!

Highlights of ADCU National Uber Strike and protest at Uber HQ London - 20th July 2022

WHAT WE DO

Demanding change and making a better future for all app based drivers and couriers

Industrial Action

We take a stand against exploitative practices and poor treatment from operators, employers and regulators. We hold protests, demos and convoys to highlight and fight against the problems in our industry, we reach out to employers and regulators to demand improved working conditions, and we support our members in launching legal action and employment tribunal cases. We campaign for our rights, our safety and our dignity at work and will never back down in our fight to achieve fair treatment.

Legal Assistance

As the number of licensed private hire drivers and vehicles soar, licensing authorities all over the UK are getting tough on enforcement against private hire drivers like we’ve never seen before. You need the assurance of good legal assistance through an appeals process and the Magistrates Court if you have been wrongly accused. ADCU has teamed up with major law firms to ensure you have expert support at your time of need.  Your badge is your livelihood, protect it by joining ADCU today. Remember, we can’t help with pre-existing problems so join today to avoid disappointment tomorrow.

Representation

The private hire industry is undergoing dramatic change with the rise of app-based operators, new technology, electric vehicles, road use charges and tough new air quality standards. Too often, private hire drivers are the last ones to the negotiating table so licensing authorities place too much of the burden on us.  In recent years, the ADCU have made massive gains through effective representation and action. Join us today and strengthen your voice and protect your livelihood. ADCU is the only truly independent trade union 100% dedicated to you and to the industry we share. No hidden agendas, no distractions, no competing objectives.

We empower drivers to make their voices heard and support them in standing up for their rights.

WHAT WE WANT

Fair treatment for every driver - from operators, licensing authorities and police.
A cap on licensing so
drivers in can make a fair income.
Income guarantees from operators - incomes have collapsed through over supply.
Worker rights protections
and worker status.
Right to be properly
consulted on regulatory changes.
Safety and security
on the job.

our recent campaigns & successes

Tirelessly fighting for private hire drivers

WE WON 'WORKER STATUS' FOR ALL UK UBER DRIVERS

We recently won at the UK Supreme Court leading to all Uber drivers in the UK being reclassified with 'worker status' ensuring they now receive holiday pay and the right to national minimum wage for all logged-on hours.

MAKING SURE LOCAL OPERATORS FOLLOW EMPLOYMENT LAW

Our members in Northampton recently took a local operator to the employment tribunal to fight for worker status. We don't just fight the big global companies, but any rogue operator large or small, global or regional.

GOING AFTER BOLT TO FORCE BETTER WORKING CONDITIONS

Our members in London recently staged a protest outside Bolt's offices to demand worker status, fare increases and an end to unfair deactivations. We are also in the process of supporting drivers taking Bolt to the Employment Tribunal to sue for worker status.

WINNING LICENCES BACK FROM TfL ON A NEAR WEEKLY BASIS

We are defending our London members on a near weekly basis in the magistrates court and winning them their private hire licences back after being unfairly revoked by TfL.

FIGHTING FOR BETTER SUPPORT DURING THE PANDEMIC

We have lobbied and campaigned for greater levels of governmental support during the Covid-19 pandemic. Our members in Scotland have played a key role in getting the Scottish Government to award support grants to drivers by mounting a formidable campaign which has included lobbying, protests and plenty of media coverage.

BEATING OLA AND UBER IN COURT ON 'ROBO-FIRINGS'

We won in the Amsterdam courts against Ola and Uber over their dodgy practices of using AI to automate driver deactivations. The courts ordered Uber to reinstate six of our members and also awarded them costs and damages.

STANDING UP FOR COURIERS TOO

  • Fighting for better conditions for all couriers and fast food delivery drivers.

  • Fighting for pay rises where due and demanding worker status for all.
  • Fighting to end unfair dismissals and deactivations
  • Providing legal support to all members so they don’t fall victim to their app based employers and end up getting exploited.
  • Building solidarity and fostering connection between workers.
